In Back of Beyond is a state of mind. It's about the connectedness of life and the absurdity. It's about the people, places and things that stimulate the primal in our beings. It's a reawakening of consciousness that our modern world has suppressed.

Spirits

The October nights are long and dark in the heart of Wisconsin. Under the veil of night, as frost forms on the pumpkins, death is as common as life. The combines are roaring through the corn and bean fields bringing in another crop to sustain humanity for another year. Mice, deer, turkeys, rabbits ect... follow close behind feeding on the remains, the seeds that fall to the ground. Their goal, to live another day. Cats, hawks, owls, coyotes, fox and many other predators, including man, do the same as they stalk and kill their prey in the dark of the late October night.
What should all these creatures fear the most?
The bright blinding headlights of a fast moving automobile piloted by a teenager talking on a cell phone. Being paralyzed by a beam of light, struck and killed. Road killed animals are tragically abundant year round but have noticeably increased the past few weeks as the animal world becomes active in preparation for the long winter ahead. I observed at least 10 domestic cats dead in the road in a 30 mile stretch I travel frequently. Many were family pets only hours before. Purrrrring on a warm lap.

Tonight as you gaze out your windows into the darkness you may catch a glimpse of your departed friends. Their spirit lives. Tonight as YOU wander the roads howling at the moon you too may be blinded by the headlights and die.
Your spirit will live..........

Warm Jeans

One of the great pleasures in life is pulling on a hot pair of jeans fresh from the dryer on a cold morning. The pleasure doesn't last long but it's soooo good. That's how I started my day today. It's all downhill from this moment.
Cold and windy conditions prevail in the rolling hills of S. Wisconsin. Worked outside all yesterday and got chilled to the bone. Expecting the same today. Lots of work to get done before the snow flies.
No more complaining.......
Let's ponder my quote of the day. Smiles Anyone?

Life can be wildly tragic at times, and I've had my share. But whatever happens to you, you have to keep a slightly comic attitude. In the final analysis, you have got not to forget to laugh.

3 More Things

A new day has dawned in my life. It's my Birthday!!! Big fucking deal. I'm treating myself to a day off. Not much to do anyway it's raining and looks like it will last all day.

Here's 3 more things about Jeff Kopp that I didn't even know until this morning:

  1. Jeff Kopp, what is your power animal?Your personal power animal is the White-lipped Peccary
  2. Your 'Numerology' number is 4. If it wasn't bulls**t, it would mean that you are practical, tenacious, traditional, and serious. You are well organised and have a strong work ethic.
  3. According to the US Census Bureau°, 0.166% of US residents have the first name 'Jeff' and 0.0045% have the surname 'Kopp'. The US has around 300 million residents, so we guesstimate there are 22 Americans who go by the name 'Jeff Kopp'.
The White-Lipped Peccary huh? (pictured) I've been called a pig before but I was unprepared for this. This astounding info is from the website Is This Your Name?
Give it a try? What's your power animal?

C My 9

Sunday morning. Just got back from a short nature walk along Turtle Creek in Beloit. It was nice. The Fall colors are at their peak - some maples are on fire with color, stunning. My old bones are sore and tired. This day off is much needed. Had a big wood splitting session on Thursday and I'm still recovering. Easily split over a cord, maybe 2.

Bought a new "big boy toy" on Wednesday and took delivery of it on Friday. A Hi Point C9 9mm handgun. (Pictured) The perfect accessory to my Hi Point 995 carbine that I obtained about a month ago. SEE POST HERE. AND HERE...
I like the C9. A bit on the heavy side, no big deal for me, not intending on using this piece for concealed carry. Not the prettiest pistol made either. A very utilitarian handgun and supposedly very accurate. Fits great in my small but strong hands. Have not fired it yet - will be testing this week sometime. Stay tuned for full report. A four day, doe only deer hunt is going on this weekend so I'm staying out of the woods.

My plan is to do some relaxing today - sip beer and watch a little football. Wish I had my guitar!!
Fucked up so bad not bringing one with me. Thought I'd be on the road a week. Didn't quite work out that way. Should have known.

Truth

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.
- Ellen Goodman

Isn't this the truth. So glad I'm not normal.

Be Back Soon

Good morning world. Looks like a rain day here in S. Wisconsin. Not raining yet but the Weather Channel assures me it's close. Got a few chores to do - after that not really sure what is going down. Always an adventure. Just the way I like it.

Rolled my Dodge Shadow into the shop the other day and performed some maintenance chores. Did an coolant flush and fill - also pulled my thermostat and drilled a small hole in it to solve a small problem that occurs occasionally that's cooling system related. Went well and am happy as hell to finally get that done. Just an oil change to get done before I take it on the road. No problem.

Still bored. Not enough joy in my world. Too much work and not enough play. But that's how it goes sometimes.
I'll stop whining now.
It just make me realize how much I enjoy the life I've created for myself. I'll be back soon.

Bored?

Nice Sunday. Warm, sunny - a little breezy. Had a day off today more or less. That means I worked all day on my own projects. Finished my car painting project. Done.... Finally.
Did some interior beautification also. The Shadow is road worthy and ready for adventure.

Sitting in an easy chair, sipping beer and watching the Packers play the Seahawks at the moment. Life is good. Kind of bored though. Rare in my life. Trust me, I'm highly motivated to change that.

Market Forces

The slide of the American economy continues - the Dow Jones average dropped 778 points today which represents about a 7% decline of the total market. It boggles my mind that countless investors are dumping stocks from some solid companies for big losses. The decline of the housing market is not a sufficient explanation for the devaluation of our markets. Surely its part of the equation, but that alone does not account for the big drops in other sectors of our economy.

Fear seems to be the prevalent market force at the moment. The media has whipped a solvable problem into a meltdown of epic proportions. Brokerage firms big into mutual funds are being forced to sell many good stocks because investors are freaking out and cashing in. These investors need to be paid. The cumulative effect especially during the closing hours of trading has been unprecedented. Huge corporate losses for no real reason.
Paranoia will destroy ya.

It's all been very perplexing this past few weeks. The panic of 2008 will be a hot topic for historians of the future. I hope I live through it.

4 Wheeled Friend

After receiving over an inch of rain between last night and this morning the sky cleared and brought us a beautiful Wednesday. The sun makes me happy. An easy work day. Too wet to do much on the farm. Not hard to find something to do however. The day flies by fast whether busy or not.

Tomorrow afternoon I'm pulling my car into the shop and delving into some and minor repairs on my Dodge Shadow. Looking forward to some automotive love. A radiator flush and fill is on top of my agenda and probably will end up doing an oil change too. A little preventative maintenance goes a long way before a long Wisconsin winter. I love my Shadow!

I've been shopping around for some adventure this winter and may have found it. Got an email in response to a resume I sent out months ago. May be going overseas to work for a few months. Details forthcoming........

Ha Ha Ha

Feeling pretty good in a world that's full of turmoil. The stock market is crashing, commodity prices are bottoming out, a meteor is striking the earth tomorrow, I have no social life and rain is expected for the next several days. On top of everything - the Cubs lost, the Badgers lost, the Brewers lost, and the Packers lost all in the same weekend. Nothing but problems to solve lately.
But I feel great!
It always seems my prosperity grows exponentially when times are rough. Being homeless and working hard agrees with me.
YES!!!! I do laugh all the way to the bank. They know me well there.

If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.

Virtues

The Twelve Virtues of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky.

The first virtue is curiosity. A burning itch to know is higher than a solemn vow to pursue truth. To feel the burning itch of curiosity requires both that you be ignorant, and that you desire to relinquish your ignorance. If in your heart you believe you already know, or if in your heart you do not wish to know, then your questioning will be purposeless and your skills without direction. Curiosity seeks to annihilate itself; there is no curiosity that does not want an answer. The glory of glorious mystery is to be solved, after which it ceases to be mystery. Be wary of those who speak of being open-minded and modestly confess their ignorance. There is a time to confess your ignorance and a time to relinquish your ignorance.

Only 11 more virtues to go! Check them out via my link above. Enough brain food for months care of our friend Eliezer.
